Brad Friedel Biography

Brad Friedel is an international football goalkeeper who was born on May 18, 1971 in Lakewood, Ohio in the United States and lives with his wife Tracy and two daughters, Izabella and Allegra.

His actual name is Bradley Howard Friedel, and he grew up in Bay Village, where attended Westerly Elementary School and Bay Middle School. Brad Friedel graduated from Bay High School in 1989 after which he attended the University of California, Los Angeles.

Brad Friedel played 82 games for the United States Men’s national soccer team between 1992 and 2005 and represented his country at three FIFA World Cup tournaments, thus making him the third most-cap goalkeeper (football) in the team’s history. Brad Friedel was nicknamed “The Human Wall” by fans for his brilliant performance during the 2002 World Cup.

During his three year stint at the University, from 1990 to 1992, he was a part of the men’s soccer team. Brad Friedel was the National Collegiate Athletic Association Champion 1990 and was selected for Division I First-Team-All-American (soccer) in 1991 and 1992 as the Top University Goalkeeper. In 1992, he won the Herman Trophy and was named University Player of the Year. Brad Friedel discontinued his university education to pursue a professional football career and practiced with Newcastle United F.C. as an on loan player from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF).

In 1995, his agent brought in a 1.1 million dollar deal that led to the transfer of Brad Friedel from USSF to a leading Turkey team, Galatasaray S.K. Two years later he moved to the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer and the same year, he was named the Major League Soccer (MLS) Goalkeeper of the year. In 1998, he went on to play for Liverpool football club.

In November 2000, Brad Friedel was taken in by Graeme Souness to play for Blackburn Rovers on a free transfer. He showcased his skills consistently since joining the club and his good performances ensured the team’s return to the Premiership. One of his most memorable performances for Blackburn Rovers came in the League Cup Final in 2002, where he had a string of saves to his credit. In the same year, Brad Friedel helped his team with a 2-1 win over Arsenal F.C. at Highbury and was awarded Man of the Match. His impressive performance against Fulham F.C. in the same season, which included a penalty kick save, helped Blackburn Rovers to win the match 2-1.

Brad Friedel was selected for the Premiership Starting XI at the end of 2002-2003 season in English football and was given the Blackburn Player of the Year award for the 15 clean sheets he kept. In a game against Charlton Athletic on February 21, 2004, Brad Friedel scored a goal from open play in the 90th minute, an occurrence which is considered rare for a goalkeeper. He earned another Man of the Match award on September 9, 2006 in a game against Sheffield United F.C. in the FA Premier League, where he managed a number of saves that included two penalty kick saves. On April 14, 2006 Brad Friedel extended his contract with Blackburn Rovers and played for the club till he moved to Aston Villa in 2008, where he pursues his career at present.
