Jurgen Klinsmann Biography

Jurgen Klinsmann is an iconic figure for modern day soccer in Germany and he had a serious contribution in helping Germany win the 1990 World Cup and the 1996 European Championship. This biography will try to cover the striker's career, all the way from his youth days to his retirement in the United States.

Jurgen Klinsmann Biography – Youth Clubs and Stuttgart - One of the strangest facts about Klinsmann's youth that I found was that he played EVERY position on the pitch during his time with TB Gingen (1972-1974), SC Geislingen an der Steige (1974-1978) and the youth club of the Stutgarter Kickers (1978-1981). He finally settled as a striker when he got to the Kickers (which, by the way, was a second division team at that point) and by the time he was 17, he was already selected to the club's senior team.

Date of birth July 30, 1964
Place of birth Göppingen, West Germany
Height 5.11FT - 1.82M
Playing position Striker

Although he did not make an immediate impact, being mostly a substitute in his first two seasons, his next two would earn him a lot of praise, with Jurgen Klinsmann's goal tally reaching 22 in 60 matches. He was immediately spotted and offered by the bigger Stuttgart team, VFB, who were playing in the first division and thus, Jurgen Klinsmann moved to his new club in 1984.

Playing in the first division was a huge chance for the young Jurgen and he didn't miss out on the opportunity. Given the chance to play regularly, he soon became one of the top strikers in the German league and in 1987, made his way into the national team.

Jurgen Klinsmann's goals (over 80 in approximately 160 games played for Stuttgart) earned him the interest of several bigger European clubs, including the likes of Real Madrid, Juventus Torino and Internazionale Milano. He decided to move to the latter in 1989, hitting the brick wall of the defensive Serie A playing style full on.

1990 also brought him one of the biggest joys of his career as a professional soccer player, Jurgen Klinsmann becoming World Champion with Germany's national side. His contribution wasn't overlookable either, since he scored 3 important goals throughout the tournament. But when the World Cup was over, it was time to go back to the tactical rigor of Serie A.

Jurgen Klinsmann Biography – Playing All Over Europe
- The Italian Serie A wasn't the best of environments for a striker like Klinsmann. Although he managed to score 34 goals in 95 matches for Inter, winning the UEFA Cup in 1991 with the Italian side, he never really accommodated to Inter's playing style and the defensive horror that was the Serie A back then. In Germany, Jurgen Klinsmann had a goal/match ratio of 1/2, which dropped to 1/3 with Inter. So in 1992, when As Monaco came in with an offer, Klinsmann was happy to sign.

The two seasons spent at Monaco were a slight improvement in Klinsmann's game when compared to what he played with Inter (at Monaco he had a more important role in the team as well). He only spent 2 seasons here though, since right after the 1994 World Cup (in which he scored 5 goals but failed to qualify to the final with Germany) he was bought by English club Tottenham Hotspur, where he had a rough season, despite his good goal ratio (21 goals in 41 matches).

The fans didn't really take Jurgen in the Hotspur family, since it was him and Germany who knocked out England in the 1994 World Cup and he also had a reputation as a diver (and diving is hated all throughout England – just check what happened to Cristiano Ronaldo recently, when he started being regarded as a tricky player). Despite all this, he managed to get the English Footballer of the Year award in his sole season in the Premier League.

By the end of the season, he was back on the road, this time back home to Germany. Jurgen Klinsmann signed a deal with German giants Bayern Munich, for whom he played two years and many say those were 2 of his most successful years.

He won several trophies during these two years, including the UEFA Cup and German League with Bayern as well as the European Championship with Germany's national squad. These trophies crowned his career (although he was still missing a Champions League title) and reaching retirement age, he spent half a season in Serie A again, for Sampdoria and the other half back at Tottenham Hotspur.

Years National Team Games Goals
1987–1998 Germany 108 47

Jurgen Klinsmann Biography – Manager Career
- After the season was over, Klinsmann retired from soccer, leaving behind a long and successful career and moving to the United States with his family. He made a short comeback to soccer in 2003, at a local USA team called Orange County Blue Star, under the pseudonym of Jay Goppingen. In 2004, he became manager of the German national team, helping it win an honorable third place at the 2006 World Cup played at home, in Germany.

Despite the fans and the German federation wanted him to stay with the national team as a manager, Klinsmann declared that he does not have the energy to continue and he only wants to return to his family in the United States and live a normal life.
