Carlos Cuellar Biography

Carlos Javier Cuellar Jimenez, better known as Carlos Cuellar, is a Spanish football player born on August 23, 1981 in Madrid. He plays in the centre-back position, and has been nicknamed as “King Carlos” in his professional circuit.

Carlos Cuellar kicked off his football career at the Spanish Football League with Calahorra. After representing the club for a year, he switched to Numancia, where his association lasted for two seasons, during which he made sixty two appearances. In 2003, he moved to the La Liga by joining Osasuna and made his presence felt in the seventy matches that he played in. In the 2004-05 season, Carlos Cuellar not only was a significant part of the team that secured the fourth place in the league, but he also played a vital role in its road to the Copa del Rey final. In the Union of European Football Association (UEFA) Cup

quarter-final match against Bayer 04 Leverkusen, in April 2007, he scored a goal in the first minute, which was the fastest goal of the tournament that season.

Carlos Cuellar signed a four-year deal with Rangers in July 2007 for a whooping fee of £2.37 million. He made his competitive debut for the club in the end of July against FK Zeta, in which his team emerged victorious. His impressive performance in the first season fetched him the Clydesdale Bank Premier League Player of the Month award for August 2007. Carlos Cuellar notched his first goal for Rangers in their win over Gretna in September 2007. He was a crucial member of the team that went on to win the Scottish League Cup and the Scottish Cup held that season.

For his exceptional feat at the 2007-08 Scottish Premier League (SPL) season, Carlos Cuellar was given the Clydesdale Bank SPL Player of the Year award. It also earned him the Scottish Football Writers Associations Footballer of the Year title.

Carlos Cuellar switched to Aston Villa in August 2008 for a huge fee of £7.8 million. He hopes that his participation in the English Premier League will pave way for his entry into the Spanish national team in future.
